Verizon: 5G Lab

Verizon’s 5G Lab works with local innovators to grow the 5G ecosystem. Together, they explore the boundaries of 5G network technology, co-create new applications and hardware, and rethink what’s possible in a 5G world. The NYC lab is the capstone partner for this project, which is already open for collaboration.

5G Lab comes up with an idea for solving the issue presented by the computational power required by end-users to run machine learning (ML) by improving the bottleneck and network with 5G. The current ML is required to run on client (mobile) to achieve better response time, sacrificing accuracy, to avoid network conjunction that can happen on every mobile device, especially those in crowded areas. The low latency and high bandwidth made possible with 5Gcreates a new opportunity for maximizing the potential of many types of applications. 5G Labs views an innovative machine learning system design centered on computing power will be able to connect thousands of users through a new, powerful network presents a compelling advantage made possible with a 5G network.

To demonstrate the idea of centralizing the computation power, 5G Lab provided a system design with a web front-end for users (i.e. a store owner) to upload product images that they want to have recognized by a customer. A central machine can then train on these images and provide the desired recognition to customers via streaming. The front-end and ML algorithm will be provided to the capstone team that will work with Verizon 5G Lab on system design and the verifying that the technical solution developed is feasible.
