A team of undergraduate students were tasked with developing applications to highlight the benefits of Verizon’s 5G network. The students created an application designed to assist caregivers and family members of those suffering from Alzheimer’s. Studies have shown that one major area of concern for those suffering from Alzheimer’s or dementia is leaving the stove turned on unattended, resulting in kitchen fires. Using Verizon’s 5G network, NJIT students created an app that monitors stove activity in the home. Specifically, the app uses sensors to monitor whenever the stove is turned on and sends an alert to family members or caregivers whenever the stove is on and left unattended for more than a pre-configured number of minutes. The alert, sent through an app, allows the family to contact the patient, alert authorities, and visually see what is happening in the kitchen at the time.
